    This was given to a student to help them memorize the high E and B strings in the key of C/Am. The note pattern is something you often hear in neo-classical guitar playing. It's actually quite challenging! You can get the free tab for this here: www.milehighshred.com/freetabs/alec-m-1-19-20-2-neo-classical-descending-the-e-and-b-strings

    This was given to a student so they could work on descending scales. The scale is broken up into small bursts, or chunks, to make it easier to practice going down a scale shape.

    This was given to a student to help them hear and feel fast picking better. This exercise/drill goes between a full bar of all down strokes, and a full bar of reverse gallops. The palm-muting is optional. You can see the free tabs for this here: www.milehighshred.com/freetabs/brandon-t-6-28-19-1-single-notestring-palm-muted-down-picking-and-reverse-gallops

    1:13:26 - Literally HOW TO SHRED Original Video: ua-cam.com/video/t0s3damhSQk/v-deo.htmlsi=ES-8a9PEuMnv5uhU This video shows something you can do that can be applied to "shred guitar". Does it actually teach you HOW TO SHRED? No, I don't think so. Jack Wood Guitar talks about the importance of being able to pick fast, legato fast, and combine the two. I agree with that! But, then what's demonstrated is going to be something far too difficult for most people when they are learning how to play incredibly fast, and then jumps ahead to basically, "once you can play this one thing then you can play all kinds of other stuff" and doesn't cover any steps of progression. Yeah, I get it, the video is meant to be short, but that's not going to provide instruction on how to get the most out of what's in the video, which is something I find most people are lacking. Also, you are told to play triplets, but I don't remember there being any real reason for it. You can play 16th notes too. In fact, any subdivision is fine. Shred guitar is about playing incredibly fast, and typically involves rapid note changes. Playing like this around 180 - 200 bpm 16th notes, or 240 - 270 bpm 8th note triplets is what I and many others would consider shred guitar speed territory. 1:54:44 - How to play FAST alternate picking explained in 2 min! Original Video: ua-cam.com/video/JMepAcbZ8I8/v-deo.htmlsi=enJBWja9E_fxAnSl I don't feel like this video explained HOW to alternate pick at fast speeds at all. It's another video demonstrating the classic "Paul Gilbert Lick" which I feel is TERRIBLE for trying to push maximum picking speed. If you're trying to push your picking speed beyond your limits, please do not try doing it with the Paul Gilbert Lick. Also, you are once again advised to not use your elbow to pick fast, and only use your wrist. If you want to pick between 250 - 300 bpm 16th notes (or even faster) wellllll you're going to need to use that elbow.

    Oftentimes people will try playing things that are too difficult, which results in frustration and no progress. On the other hand, sometimes people will play things that are quite easy for themselves and STILL make no progress. That's because you STILL NEED TO PUSH YOURSELF IN ORDER TO GROW! It's important to find a middle ground - not too difficult, and not too easy either. If there's a riff/lick/exercise that you've been stuck on and can't figure out how to make progress, let me know! I'd like to put together a lesson showing how you can break things down to start making progress again. 3:36 - How to Build Speed on the Guitar Original Video: ua-cam.com/video/zVePl-TKl1w/v-deo.htmlsi=ot5qrRPNNZqZyC0x The premise of this video is to figure out a speed you can't play something, then go even slower than that speed, and play the riff/lick/exercise about 20 bpm slower for 3 minutes straight. Then, the next day, do it 3 bpm faster, and then keep doing that for a week. Only going up 3 bpm faster. Well, if you truly wish to maximize your speed building potential, do NOT follow this approach. When I'm playing my fastest, there's a need for warming up into the maximum speeds. Just starting at a higher speed each day won't do that. You need to be pushing higher and higher speeds THE SAME DAY you practice, not waiting a day. How to practice for pushing and building speed is shown in live stream guitar practice sessions I do, and is also detailed in the FREE EBOOK Mile High Shred Metronome Method. Don't have it yet? Here is where you can get it: www.milehighshred.com/metronome_method.html 35:07 - The ULTIMATE Alternate Picking Workout (From Beginner To Pro) Original Video: ua-cam.com/video/xopSLz93_kM/v-deo.htmlsi=Yh4kB49sdpQ7QS9k It's a fine workout, but I would never give anything like this to a beginner. The way it's presented seems to be one solid piece of music. A bit too simplified to truly address people who are beginners, intermediates, advanced, and pro. Am I being nitpicky? Yes! At one point in this video there is text saying something along the lines of never use your elbow to pick, then very soon after it says it's okay to use your elbow to get some extra speed. Seems like that would lead to confusing people more than helping. Using your elbow, usually, is just fine. You can't pick your fastest without doing so. 47:03 - 10 THINGS I Wish I Knew As A Beginner Guitarist Original Video: ua-cam.com/video/iFJLCEw5b9o/v-deo.htmlsi=UpS4CaS6TGpR7cKS Feels like I typically agree with the things Bernth says in his videos. The thumbnail he made for this one is very misleading. It has one of those obnoxious red circles over his ring finger on the fret board with text saying something like "Never do THIS". Aaaand there isn't a damn thing in the video going over that that "THIS" is. This also didn't seem like 10 things he actually wished he had known as a beginning guitar player, but more like 9 (yes, 9) exercises you can play to help you not be a beginner. The material is fine, and all of it can certainly be used to help you get better. The extra sales pitch at the end pissed me off though. Felt like he was saying if you don't get his new instruction course then you will forever suck. Not cool, Bernth. Not cool!

    150 bpm ?!?!? OMG 😱 👏🙌... I have practiced this alternate picking exercise many many times and I can't even do 90 bpm... I think I must have some neuronal or nervous limit 😓. Edit: my problem is the Inside Picking (like this exercise when it goes from the first to the sixth string), here is my 'Achilles' heel'... with Outside Picking much better. (Sorry my english)

      If you can't get to 120 bpm with a 6 notes per beat lick/riff, then working it up as 3 notes per click is a far better approach. I go into a lot of detail with this stuff in a free eBook I put out called the Metronome Method. Here's a link if you're interested in learning more about it: www.milehighshred.com/metronome_method.html

    51:59 - How to build speed (3 easy steps, forget scales!) Original Video: ua-cam.com/video/-WclotoFImA/v-deo.htmlsi=REfCA6bGUtNA9Pgj Although I agree with part of the message in this video, I do have SOME disagreements. The idea of starting with small, easy things, and then gradually expanding to more difficult ones is something I'm totally on board with! I do not feel like this video explained how to build speed at all. It was just advice on starting off with small steps, and working towards more difficult things. That advice, although helpful, does not actually teach you HOW to build speed. Other things like telling you to move with the smallest amount of movement possible, and always play relaxed with zero tension are things I feel can actually prevent people from getting faster.

    Thank you for this review! Sorry I talk so slowly, hahah. Yes, 30 mins per day for jamming is an awful lot, and a bit unrealistic for most adults with jobs and families. I also agree about deciding whether or not to even mention pickslanting. If I get a student like me, with little to no natural talent, I will explain it all. But, if I see that a student is already sort of 2WPS already, I am hesitant to mention it... It's almost harmful to bring conscious focus to something they're already doing unconsciously/automatically. Almost like: don't explain to a bird the science behind how it flies, in case it overthinks as a result and falls out of the sky.

    • @Milehighshred
      @Milehighshred 27 днів тому

      Thank you for watching! I like that - don't explain to the bird how it flies. I've had quite a few people come to me after they tried focusing on pick slanting and they got stuck. They were convinced they HAVE to do downward slanting for everything.

    I think this is one of the reasons why many famous bands release great albums at the beginning, but then their music quality declines. They simply lose passion, and creating music becomes a routine task, lacking the strong emotions that were present earlier. It's like hedonic adaptation is at play here.
